Packers Have Elite Complementary Pieces at Wide Receiver

The Green Bay Packers have one of the youngest wide receiver groups in the NFL. There isn’t a single player on the depth chart who has more than two seasons of NFL experience heading into the 2024 season. But, what they are lacking in experience they more than make up for in talent.

While the team doesn’t have a bonafide No. 1 receiver, this is a deep group with diverse skill sets. Each of them excels in a different area, making the Packers a difficult group to game plan against.

Over at The Athletic, Larry Holder broke down each wide receiver group in the NFC and stacked them against each other. Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs have been projected to receive 75+ targets, tops on the team.

Right below them are Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks, who are in the 40-74 target range. Listed as complementary players, Watson and Wicks have elite advanced stat numbers for players in that target range.

An argument can be made that Wicks, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, is the best wide receiver in the NFL in the 40-74 projected target range. He is in the top seven in EPA/Target, EPA/reception and reception percentage. His catchable percentage was 12th.

Watson was fourth in EPA/reception, as these Packers receivers can make some big plays when the ball is in their hands. If the entire group can stay healthy, Green Bay is going to have one of the most dynamic passing attacks in the NFL

On any given week, any one of Reed, Doubs, Watson and Wicks can lead the team in receiving. Don’t forget about tight ends Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft, who both played well during their rookie seasons in 2023.

Who will break out from this group in 2024? A strong argument can be made for any of the four players mentioned in the article, but a healthy season from Watson would likely produce the numbers closest to a prototypical No. 1 receiver.
