Green Bay Packers Near Top of Running Back Power Rankings

The Green Bay Packers underwent a major change in their backfield this offseason. Long-time running back Aaron Jones is no longer with the team. He was released this offseason following the signing of Josh Jacobs.

For a few hours, Green Bay Packers fans thought the team had assembled the strongest running back duo in the NFL. Jacobs and Jones are both capable lead-backs with stellar production on their resume.

But, shortly after the Jacobs deals as announced, came news that Jones was being released. As if that news wasn’t hard enough for fans to stomach, Jones agreed to a deal with the rival Minnesota Vikings.

Despite the major change, analysts are still very high on the Green Bay Packers backfield heading into 2024. Over at PFF, Trevor Sikkema has the group very high in his power rankings.

Green Bay comes in at No. 6. Only the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons were ranked higher by Sikkema.

“Josh Jacobs had a down year with the Raiders in 2023 after rushing for more than 1,600 yards and earning an elite 91.9 rushing grade in 2022. But there wasn’t much help around him in Las Vegas, and he is now in Green Bay with A.J. Dillon and rookie MarShawn Lloyd behind him. That bodes well for Jacobs to enjoy a bounce-back year,” wrote Sikkema.

The Green Bay Packers have done a great job of putting together a diverse, talented group of running backs. If they hold onto a fourth for the regular season, that spot will likely go to Emanuel Wilson, who made the team in 2023 as an undrafted free agent.

If Jacobs can get near the production that he had during the 2022 season, his addition will be a major one for the team. While head coach Matt LaFleur has stated that he will be their lead back, the team is comfortable knowing they have strong depth behind him.

Despite some struggles in 2023, AJ Dillon is a capable power back who can find success between the tackles. MarShawn Lloyd has game-breaking athleticism, averaging 17.8 yards per reception during his last season with USC.

The Green Bay Packers will be able to mix and match in their backfield depending on what is needed at the time. Jacobs will lead the way, but he won’t have to carry the load by himself as he was asked to do at times with the Las Vegas Raiders.
