Green Bay Packers Urged to Add Veteran QB in Offseason

With only a few weeks until training camp opens, the Green Bay Packers roster is pretty much set. There are no glaring holes, as general manager Brian Gutekunst did a wonderful job addressing needs this offseason.

But, even the strongest rosters can always use some improvements on the margins. That is what separates the good from the great teams, as they are always looking for ways to make their team better.

For the Green Bay Packers, one of those underlying needs is at quarterback. The team is confident in Jordan Love as the face of their franchise moving forward, but the depth behind him is questionable.

That is why Matt Holder of Bleacher Report has suggested the team make a move for a veteran quarterback. It is one of the things he has on the Green Bay Packers’ to-do list for the remainder of the offseason.

“Green Bay’s current second-string options under center are 2023 fifth-round pick Sean Clifford and 2024 seventh-rounder Michael Pratt. So, it has little experience behind Love, which could be a big problem if the starter goes down. Investing in a veteran insurance policy would be a smart move,” Holder wrote.

As we saw with several teams during the 2023 season, a capable backup quarterback is a necessity. The Cleveland Browns were able to make the playoffs despite starting five different quarterbacks.

On the other end of the spectrum, the New York Jets season went up in flames when Aaron Rodgers got hurt. That is something the Green Bay Packers need to have contingency plans in place to avoid.

Replacing your starting quarterback is never easy, but you want to make sure you can if the need arises. Right now, it would be hard to say there is confidence in Sean Clifford or Michael Pratt leading the team should Love be sidelined.

There are a few great backup quarterback options the Green Bay Packers could target. Ryan Tannehill and Teddy Bridgewater would both make a lot of sense as veteran backups.

They would not only provide the team with invaluable insurance but also with some leadership at the position. Only the Chicago Bears rival the Green Bay Packers in lack of games played professionally on their quarterback depth chart.
