GREEN BAY - Getting the Vince Lombardi and Curly Lambeau statues outside Lambeau Field to play along will be a tall order, but all The Beatles fans at their feet will be flashing smiles and peace signs.
In honor of Ringo Starr's 84th birthday on Sunday, fans will gather at the statues at 11:15 a.m. on the same day to record his signature “Peace & Love” exclamation as part of a global movement.
Each year since 2008, The Beatles drummer has invited everyone everywhere on July 7 to think, say or post “Peace & Love” at noon their local time to help make his birthday wish of a wave of peace and love encircling the planet come true. The annual campaign has grown to include official group greetings organized by “Peace & Love ambassadors" in 28 countries.
Green Bay is one of 34 confirmed cities worldwide participating in the celebration this year, alongside Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, London, Tokyo, Sydney, Mexico City and others, according to Starr’s website . A Facebook post created by "Peace & Love" ambassador Dee Lynn for the local event calls it “a Wisconsin first.”
Beatles and Starr fans are invited to gather in front of the Lambeau Field statues to record a short 2- to 3-minute video that will then be uploaded to Starr’s website. People are encouraged to dress in their favorite Beatles/Starr attire or something that represents Wisconsin, and they can also bring signs, according to the Facebook post.
“Lets show Ringo that Wisconsin shares his message of Peace and Love with him and the World,” the post reads.
The Lambeau meet-up got some air time this week on SiriusXM’s The Beatles Channel and its "Fab Fourum" call-in talk show. The channel has been doing special “Ringo Starr Peace & Love Birthday Week” programming.
Starr will celebrate on Sunday in Los Angeles with his annual Peace & Love Birthday with wife Barbara Starkey and a guest list that includes Joe Walsh, Fred Armisen, Ben Harper, Stephen Stills, Ed Begley Jr., Don Was and Roy Orbison Jr. At noon PST, they’ll all do the "Peace and Love” exclamation.
