Heading into the 2024 season, the Green Bay Packers have a unique setup at wide receiver. They don’t have a singular, go-to No. 1 receiver. Instead, they will be relying on several players, including Dontayvion Wicks.
A fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Virginia, Dontayvion Wicks quickly carved out a role for himself in the offense. With Christian Watson sidelined by hamstring injuries, Wicks was the player who stepped into the lineup.
In 15 games last season, he caught 39 passes for 581 yards and four touchdowns. He and Jordan Love found instant chemistry, as he was a reliable player for the coaching staff to turn to.
His level of performance has warranted a larger role in the Packers’ offense in 2024. Trending in the right direction, it is not surprising that Dontayvion Wicks is garnering attention from NFL analysts.
Over at CBS Sports, Josh Edwards put together an All-Breakout Team for 2024. He highlighted players on their rookie deals that could take a step this season. Leading his trio of wide receivers was Dontayvion Wicks.
“Wicks (74.4%) and Wilson (76.3%) each ranked among the Top-10 in percentage of receptions that went for either a touchdown or a first down,” Edwards wrote.
Along with the Packers emerging pass catcher, Edwards selected Michael Wilson of the Arizona Cardinals and Drake London of the Atlanta Falcons. All three players are in unique situations that could lead to big 2024 campaigns.
Wilson will receive a lot of single coverage with Marvin Harrison Jr. opposite of him. London is the unquestioned No. 1 wide receiver and will receive a massive boost with Kirk Cousins taking over as the starting quarterback.
For Dontayvion Wicks, it will come down to opportunity. Can he earn a spot in the starting lineup, beating out Watson, Romeo Doubs or Jayden Reed?
All four of them were productive in 2023 based on PFF grades. But, Dontayvion Wicks did separate himself, as his 77.8 overall grade was the highest amongst the quartet and 26th out of 128 qualified wide receivers.
