Tony Romo on Jordan Love's contract extension: 'It’s gonna get done'

WAUKESHA – Tony Romo was back in his home state for the Wisconsin State Amateur, competing this year at The Legend at Merrill Hills thanks to a top-25 finish in the 2023 event at Erin Hills. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS color analyst looked a bit worn – he had just arrived from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

But a conversation about Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love brightened his eyes after and the energy the Burlington native is known for crackled as he talked about the contract negotiations the Packers’ signal caller is working through.

“It’s gonna get done,” Romo said matter-of-factly. “No one’s letting a talent of Jordan Love walk. So, I think what he showed at the end of last year was really impressive.”

He would know a little bit about it, as he’s walked a bit in Love’s shoes.

Romo spent 2004 and 2005 as a backup in Dallas before starting 10 games in 2006. The Cowboys went 6-4 and he went to the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement.

He was seeking an extension with one year left on his deal, but the Cowboys hesitated during the summer because of the relatively short track record. So, Romo began play in 2007 – and promptly was the NFC’s offensive player of the month in September and led Dallas to a 6-1 record.

He and the Cowboys then inked a market-setting deal on Oct. 29 before their Week 8 game.

Love is signed through the 2024 season.

“I don’t think it’s a huge worry,” Romo said of whether Love’s extension is done before camp opens. “I think he knows he’s going to be signed. What you do as a quarterback is you let your agent talk. They kind of get through it. If he signs it before the season, great. But your job as an organization is ‘we’re going to get this signed. You know that, we know that, don’t worry about it.’ Everyone talks about ‘well, what happens if you get injured?’ And so teams usually sell you on that a little bit like, ‘well, in case of injury.’

“The truth is a quarterback of that nature, even if he did have an injury it would not change signing him to almost the exact same deal. You would just be very disappointed. I think for him, like anybody, it’s gonna happen, don’t worry about it, put your mind at ease.”

The Packers report to training camp July 22. In a very short back-and-forth with reporters during minicamp in June about his contract, Love was asked if he was optimistic his deal would get done before camp.

    “Yes,” he said.

The natural follow-up was why he was optimistic, and Love offered only, “It’s what I’ve heard.”
