Analyst Urges Packers To Address One Major Roster Concern

As the Green Bay Packers prepare for training camp next week, there aren’t any glaring needs on the roster. There will be some competitions for starting spots, but the team doesn’t have huge holes as in years past.

Last season at this time, all of the focus was on the quarterback position. Jordan Love was taking over as the starter for Aaron Rodgers, who was traded to the New York Jets.

Love showed some flashes during the preseason that got people excited. After a slow-ish start to the 2023 campaign, he found his footing and the team took off.

He is now their quarterback of the present and future, as the Packers look to have hit for a third consecutive time on the most important position in the game. But, quarterback remains an area people will be keeping an eye on this offseason.

Love isn’t going to be unseated as the starter; that is his job for the foreseeable future. But, the depth behind him is concerning.

Right now, Sean Clifford, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and Michael Pratt, a seventh-round rookie, make up the depth chart behind Love. That is something Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report believes needs to change.

Backup quarterback is one of the roster holes Ballentine believes the Packers need to address during training camp.

“The Packers are going to be in the thick of things, but it means that every win is going to matter.

So things like having a backup quarterback who can come in and win a few games if Jordan Love gets injured are critical…

There aren’t many veterans out there who would fit the bill. Ryan Tannehill is the most obvious choice at this point,” Ballentine wrote.

As we saw during the 2023 season, quarterback depth is extremely important. The Cleveland Browns were able to find some, making the playoffs despite five different players starting under center.

On the opposite end of the spectrum was the New York Jets. They didn’t have a contingency plan in place behind Aaron Rodgers and his injury torpedoed their season.

The Packers need to avoid that catastrophic scenario. Should something happen to Love and he was forced to miss time, how much confidence would there be in Clifford or Pratt keeping things afloat?

Matt LaFleur and the coaching staff may have some, capable of making a strong game plan for a week or two. The Packers fan base, however, likely has none.
