Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love

It’s no secret that NFL teams like to control the narrative of what’s being said about them in the media.

But the Green Bay Packers may have taken things a little too far on Tuesday morning when a member of the public relations team told reporters not to ask quarterback Jordan Love any questions about training camp or his current contract situation and his handler abruptly ended his media availability once a reporter asked him about his desire to get his contract extension done.

While it certainly is understandable the Packers don’t want Love commenting on his contract status while he’s in negotiations with the organization and training camp right around the corner, ripping him away from an army of reporters with recorders and cameras and not letting him answer any more questions after the fact seems a bit drastic.

Especially when a simple “no comment” or “my agent is handling it” gets the point across.

The contract question, asked by Lily Zhao of Fox 6 News in Milwaukee, was a more than fair one. Love could potentially be the first $60 million-per-year quarterback in NFL history, and if he’s not at training camp because he doesn’t have a new contract, that’s a pretty big national story.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said last month the goal was to get Love’s extension done before training camp begins on July 22. Well, that’s just days away.

Love signed a one-year, $13.5M contract for 2024 last May, but after his breakout 2023-24 season in which he threw for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while guiding Green Bay to a 9-8 record and an appearance in the NFC divisional round of the playoffs, there’s likely zero chance he steps onto the field without a new deal.

Per Spotrac , Love’s current projected market value is $47.9M per season, which would make him the sixth-highest paid QB in the NFL right behind Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts ($51M per year) and ahead of Arizona’s Kyler Murray ($46.1M per year).
