Analyst Has Brutal Take For Packers Special Teams Player

The Green Bay Packers look to have a pretty strong roster heading into training camp this offseason. There are a few positional groups that will face questions about experience, but this is a group on the rise.

After winning a playoff game last season, expectations are going up for the Packers. Quarterback Jordan Love looks like a potential star at the position, which would be three in a row for the franchise.

Green Bay has put together a deep, talented stable of playmakers around him to help bring things to the next level. Defensively, the team has emerging young talent to rely on as well.

The Packers could have one of the best pass rushes in the NFL with Preston Smith, Rashan Gary and Lukas Van Ness leading the way. Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt and Karl Brooks are excellent pass rushers from the defensive tackle spot as well.

Linebacker is a question mark, with Quay Walker likely being joined by rookie Edgerrin Cooper. In the secondary, the biggest addition was safety Xavier McKinney, who will shore up the back end along with Jaire Alexander.

The biggest competition battle heading into camp will likely be on special teams. Last season’s kicker, Anders Carlson, has been competing with players all offseason.

Veteran Greg Joseph has been around the longest, with Jack Podlesny being replaced by rookie James Turner. Carlson seemingly has the upper hand in the race, but one analyst isn’t so sure about how long he will hold onto it.

Over at Blecher Report, David Kenyon wrote up a piece predicting a bust for each team in 2024. For the Packers, his selection was Carlson.

“Kickers are fickle. After a single misfire in seven games to start 2023, Anders Carlson missed a kick in 10 of Green Bay’s next 12 outings. Lost confidence is a real challenge for specialists, and a similar kind of struggle could lead to Carlson not making it through 2024 on the roster,” Kenyon wrote.

Carlson had a long leash during his rookie season, as the Packers didn’t bring any competition in against him. That will not be the case in 2024, as he has faced competition all offseason.

If those inconsistencies show up during training camp or the preseason, a change could be made. With heightened expectations, Matt LaFleur needs a kicker he can count on consistently throughout the season.
