The Packers are still trying to improve at quarterback

The Green Bay Packers have invested heavily in the quarterback position , but general manager Brian Gutekunst isn't done yet. On Friday, the team worked out free agent quarterback Jake Fromm, a 2020 fifth-round pick.

A former Georgia quarterback, Fromm was a fifth-rounder by the Buffalo Bills in the same year the Packers drafted Jordan Love in the first round. After two years in Buffalo without many opportunities, he also played for the New York Giants and Washington Commanders.

That doesn't mean the Packers will sign him, but they are considering other options. Right now, the depth chart has Jordan Love and two other day 3 picks — Sean Clifford, last year's fifth-rounder, and Michael Pratt, this year's seventh-rounder. The roster also has Alex McGough, a former USFL MVP at quarterback, but the team moved him to wide receiver earlier this offseason.

    Competition

Brian Gutekunst has indicated he wants to create competition and develop more quarterbacks. Before the draft, he stressed how it aligns with the franchise's roster-building philosophy.

"Getting back to drafting multiple quarterbacks is something that I've wanted to do," Brian Gutekunst said at the Combine. "There's some guys with interesting skill sets that are going to get taken later that might have a pretty good chance to make it."

He fulfilled that promise by getting Michael Pratt in the seventh round. And keeping his pro scouting department with an updated data on veteran quarterbacks around the league is also a step in that direction.

    Profile

Jake Fromm entered the league as an accurate quarterback, but the lack of arm strength was a big topic of conversation in the pre-draft process.

"Heady quarterback who is light on physical traits but sees the game like a pro signal-caller most of the time," NFL Network's draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote . "Fromm has big-game experience and proved to be a worthy challenger against Alabama as a freshman and sophomore. He's a full-field reader who has shown a consistent ability to change plays and make smart pre- and post-snap decisions. Arm strength is a concern, and that concern may be exacerbated if his ball placement and timing aren't more consistent. He's an intelligent game-manager whose range is good backup to middling starter, but he will be scheme- and skill-position-needy at the next level."

Since he entered the league, Fromm has only appeared in three regular season games, which included two starts for the New York Giants in 2021. He completed only 45% of his passes, with a touchdown and three interceptions — an underwhelming 38.9 passer rating.
