Packers’ Offense Ranks At Bottom Of The NFL In Major Category

Right now, the Green Bay Packers are perhaps the hottest and most promising team in all of football. One of the reasons so many people around the league are so high on them is that most of their key contributors are young.

The problem is that one of the hardest aspects of building an NFL team from a beginnings all the way to a Super Bowl championship is navigating the league’s hard salary cap.

It requires getting some players to take enough of a pay cut, not to mention drafting well on a consistent basis so that a team will have some key contributors on inexpensive rookie contracts.

So, how does that affect the Packers?

Quarterback Jordan Love is coming off his first season as a starter, and he’s looking like a true star in the making. The same is true for their four ascendant wide receivers — Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks.

Their offense is so young that it is the least expensive one in the entire NFL going into the 2024 season.

The Packers’ offense is inexpensive…for now

According to spotrac.com , Love is their only offensive player who has a cap hit of eight figures for the upcoming season. Josh Jacobs, the former Pro Bowl running back they acquired this offseason, comes in second at just $5.3 million.

However, eventually everyone has to pay for services rendered, and a big bill will soon be due for Green Bay’s beloved gridiron squad.

Love is up for a contract extension, as he’s heading into the final season of his current contract. Watson and Doubs have two years left on their current deals, and running back AJ Dillon, who has been a mainstay in Green Bay’s offense over the last four years, will become a free agent at the end of the 2024 season unless he gets an extension.

Meanwhile, Kenny Clark, a three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle who has the Packers’ biggest cap hit at $27.5 million, also has one year left on his contract.

The Packers could soon enter a situation where they will have to pick and choose which of their studs they will extend while letting the other ones leave.

It’s a situation similar to what the Cincinnati Bengals are in now, as they have given out lucrative extensions to quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. That has left wideout Tee Higgins in danger of being traded, as he’s currently on their franchise tag.

It may be a good problem to have, but it’s a problem nonetheless.
