Packers Defender Sends Strong Message Over Jordan Love

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love has decided to hold out of training camp until he lands a contract extension from the team, and cornerback Keisean Nixon is already applying pressure.

Following the Packers’ decision to extend defensive lineman Kenny Clark on Saturday, Nixon has taken to social media to urge Green Bay to get something done with Love.

The situation with Love is a bit complicated.

The Packers selected Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, but the Utah State product served as Aaron Rodgers’ backup through 2022 and did not become the team’s full-time starter until last season.

As a result, Green Bay does not exactly have a large sample size on which to base its contract for Love.

Even in Love’s debut campaign as a starter, it was a tale of two seasons. The 25-year-old got off to a rather rough start, going 3-6 and throwing 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over his first nine games.

Then, over the last eight contests of 2023, Love totaled 18 touchdowns and just one pick and led the Packers to a 6-2 record. That was enough for Green Bay to sneak into the playoffs, and the Packers then upset the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round.

But really, Green Bay would be handing Love a massive extension largely based off of a 10-game sample size: those eight brilliant regular-season contests and two playoff games.

How much is Jordan Love actually worth?

It indeed appears as if the Packers have found their quarterback of the future in Love, but again, the sample size is very small.

Trevor Lawrence just landed a five-year, $275 million deal from the Jacksonville Jaguars, equaling him with Joe Burrow as the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Based on the fact that Love’s 2023 was arguably better than anything Lawrence has achieved thus far in his own NFL career, Love may ask for that and more.

The good news is that Green Bay currently has a pretty solid financial situation moving forward, so it can certainly afford to pay Jordan Love.

But that’s where things can get a little sticky.

The reason the Packers have not had to spend a lot of money on the offensive side of the ball thus far is because their players are so young. Pretty soon, their young pass-catchers will want to get paid themselves, and if Love lands a gargantuan deal, it could make keeping the band together difficult for Green Bay.
