The Green Bay Packers have not been able to reach an agreement with quarterback Jordan Love yet. However, the parties are getting closer to a long-term contract extension. According to The Athletic's NFL insider Dianna Russini, the Packers and Love's representatives have made progress and are heading in the direction of an agreement.

Jordan Love is under contract through 2024 thanks to a short-term extension he signed last year. But the quarterback is slated to make just $11 million this year, which is obviously much lower than his current market value.

Love has reported to the Packers' training camp, but he's holding-in . That means he participates in meetings, but won't practice until a deal gets done. Love has already missed three days of practice. Sean Clifford, Michael Pratt, and recently-signed Jacob Eason are splitting quarterback reps — and it hasn't been pretty.

"Every day he misses is not great for our football team," Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told Yahoo Sports . “We want him out there. We’d like him out there. We expect him out there.”

    What's going on

For the most part, the market dictates how much money Jordan Love will make. Nonetheless, there are differences in standard contract structure from team to team. Generally, the Packers don't like to include future guarantees beyond the signing bonus, but that's not how it works for quarterbacks.

"We're working really hard to get that done," Gutekunst said on Monday. "(Packers executive vice president and director of football operations) Russ (Ball) is doing a great job with (Jordan Love's agent) David Mulugheta and their team. You've got two people who are very experienced with this, so I'm optimistic. These are big deals, it takes time. They're not as easy as some people may think."

Jordan Love is technically going into his third NFL contract. After his three seasons as a backup, the Packers and the quarterback agreed to a one-year extension back in 2023 to replace the fifth-year option.

Jordan Love played at a high level down the stretch in 2023, his first season as a full-time starter. After week 9, he was arguably the best quarterback in football. Love finished the season 9th in EPA+CPOE composite and 13th in success rate. From week 9 on, he was 3rd in EPA+CPOE composite, just behind Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott, and fourth in success rate. He threw for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, with a 96.1 passer rating.
