Final igNight Market of summer will feature biggest hot-air balloon glow to date, yarn bombing, giant insect hotel

GREEN BAY - On Broadway Inc.’s final igNight Market of the summer will come with the event's biggest balloon glow to date.

Fifteen hot-air balloons will be anchored along the Fox River in Leicht Memorial Park during the market and will be illuminated from 8 to 9 p.m. Aug. 17, weather permitting.

Balloon glows make for a colorful display at dusk. The balloons don’t actually take flight but rather remain tethered on the ground, where the glow is the show.

Previous igNight Markets, which began in 2017 and have rotated among locations in the Broadway District, have hosted between 10 and 14 balloons for the annual glow, which has become a popular draw.

On Broadway Inc. downsized from four igNight Markets last year to two this season.

When and where is the August igNight Market?

It runs from 5 to 10 pm. Aug. 17 at Leicht Memorial Park, 128 Dousman St., in downtown Green Bay. It’s free.

What else is happening that night?

In addition to the more than 40 vendors scheduled to sell art and handmade goods, some interesting art installations are planned. There will be life-size glowing tree art by art collective Zoldyc, and Abigail Marquart will do yarn bombing (a kind of street art in which people who knit and crochet beautify a public space by decorating it with their work).

The Fab Collab’s giant insect hotel that was started during the June igNight Market as an interactive community art project will be finished up. Market visitors will have a chance to help decorate the structure designed to provide a welcoming habitat for pollinators to nest and overwinter.

Odyssey Climbing + Fitness will have its portable climbing wall on site. There will also be giant yard games, an LED photo wall, face painting, balloon art, food trucks, a beer tent and s’mores making to benefit the Odd Fellow Rebekah Home Association.
