Nine people were arrested Saturday during a chaotic situation near Southridge Mall where a carnival was taking place, according to the Greendale Police Department. The disturbance resulted in the carnival shutting down and the mall closing early.

Between 3 and 10 p.m., Greendale police responded to multiple calls for service stemming from the carnival at the mall's south parking lot, according to a news release issued by the department Monday afternoon.

Calls included a report of an armed robbery, a weapon complaint, a theft, three fights in progress, six disorderly conduct incidents and a report of shots fired in the area.

Because of the high volume of calls and the size of the crowds, Greendale police called in officers from Franklin, Hales Corners and Greenfield to assist.

The nine people arrested included eight juveniles and one adult.

Four of the arrests were related to an armed robbery in which a firearm was reportedly displayed; one was related to a theft; the other four were for disorderly conduct.

Officers later determined that no evidence supported the report of shots fired in the area and said the report was likely the result of noises created when stores inside the mall closed their gates in response to the events taking place outside and large groups crowding into the mall. There were no reported injuries.

Southridge Mall and carnival management decided to close early as officers remained in the area while the crowd dispersed, helping them get to nearby businesses and negotiate traffic.

The four juveniles arrested on suspicion of armed robbery were all referred to the Milwaukee County Children's Court Center for charges. All of the others were cited and released, according to the Greendale Police Department.
