Local FFA officers attend training
Each year Southwest district and Iowa FFA officers plan and facilitate Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) conferences for FFA members in the Southwest district. Atlantic High School welcomed FFA chapters from all over the Southwest district on June 4. The Greene County FFA chapter had four members participate in this event: chapter president Kayla Frederick, vice president Elise Badger, sentinel Allison Fields, and reporter Adysen Gries, along with chapter advisor Raelyn Harris.

Regional Unemployment Rises Nearly A Half Point To 2.7% In May 2024
Unemployment rates in the seven-county region rose by nearly a half point in May 2024 from the prior month but held stable with last year’s rates, according to data released this week by Iowa Workforce Development (IWD). Carroll led the area with the lowest unemployment at 2.0 percent, 0.4 points higher than April but 0.5 points below May 2023. Audubon County followed close behind at 2.1 percent, 0.4 points higher than the previous month and 0.1 points lower than last year. Greene County’s unemployment rose 0.7 points from April to 2.3 percent in May, which is 0.4 points higher than in May 2023. Guthrie County and Calhoun County’s rates increased by 0.6 points to 2.5 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively, while Sac County jumped by nearly a whole percentage point to 3.1 percent. Crawford County again recorded the highest unemployment in the region at 4.2 percent, 0.2 points higher than in April but a half point below last year. The average unemployment rate for the region was 2.7 percent, below Iowa’s 2.8 percent figure and the national 3.9 percent rate. County-by-county unemployment data is not seasonally adjusted like state and national numbers. The full IWD dataset for May 2024 unemployment is included below.
Jayettes Cruise to 11-1 Victory
The Jayettes grabbed the victory last night over Greene County. Perry was an 11-1 winner. The Jayettes wasted no time scoring in the bottom of the first, added two more in the second, exploded for six in the fourth, and walked it off with two in the fifth. Maci Tunink picked up the complete game win. She surrendered just one hit in the 5 inning mercy rule game. Karagyn Whelchel and Tunink both had 3 RBI’s in the win. Perry had 10 combined hits in the 11-1 victory.
Last Minute Deadlines, Reminders for Greene Co 4-H and Clover Kids Ahead of County Fair
There are a few last minute deadlines coming up for Greene County Clover Kids and 4-H’ers to be aware of prior to next month’s county fair. According to Greene County ISU Extension, any Clover Kids that are exhibiting animals at the county fair are encouraged to attend a practice session on Saturday. The day begins with Cattle Kids from 8:30-9:30am at the fairgrounds in Jefferson. Then from 9:30-10:30am is the Birds and Bunnies group, followed by Little Lambs from 10:30-11am.
