Turning Pink to Green
If you live in or near Greene County, you would have to had to live under a pink plastic rock to not have known about Barbie By the Bells. Courtesy of the Greene County Historical Society, this special event happened Thursday-Sunday every week in June on the south side of the square in Jefferson. Over 500 Barbie dolls in their original boxes were on display and organized into categories. Even if Barbie isn’t your thing, this event is worth looking back at, and should be seen as a reminder of what tourism and economic development can look like.
Rams baseball season ends vs. North Polk
Friday night the Greene County Rams traveled to Alleman to face Class 3A third ranked North Polk in a Substate first round baseball game. The home team needed less than four full innings to end Greene County’s season 15-0 by the 15 run rule. The game ended in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Comets scored three runs in the first, eight times in the second, three more in the third, and the fifteenth run scored in the fourth.
Register for Art Classes at Greene County Community Center
There are a series of art-related workshops coming up for area youth at the Greene County Community Center. Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department Assistant Director Nathan Kral says Jolene Peters, owner of Art on the Fly, is hosting four art opportunities for any ages six and up, starting later this week. On Thursday will be creating a geometric art on a canvas and Friday is constructing a wood and stick structure. Then next Monday is printmaking techniques with different textures on tools and using lots of different inks and paint to make art on paper. Finally, next Tuesday is a sensory class with neurographic art that promotes relaxation and brain health.
Two Greene County People Arrested to Alleged Arson
Two Greene County individuals face several felony charges for allegedly setting a house on fire in Churdan last year. According to court documents, a fire was reported before 5:30am on October 2nd at 802 Sand Street. After the fire, Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office to assist with the investigation into what he deemed to be suspicious.
Rams end softball season with 10-2 loss
Class 3A eighth ranked PCM was a 10-2 Region 2 first round softball winner in Monroe last night vs. the Greene County Rams. The contest was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Mustangs are 22-5 and advance to the semifinals while the Rams end with a 4-20 record and 11 straight losses. The Rams lost all three meetings with the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference champions, PCM.
North Polk presents big challenge for Rams
The 2-19 Greene County Rams go to 23-6 and third ranked North Polk tonight in Alleman to open Class 3A Substate baseball tournament play. Coach Kyle Stalder’s team is facing the Comets on their diamond to open the postseason for the second straight season. The Rams are a Class 3A program in baseball and have a sharing program with Paton-Churdan in both softball and baseball.
Scranton woman faces arson, fraud charges in house fire
A Scranton woman was arrested on a Greene County warrant Tuesday in connection with a house fire last October in Churdan that investigators believe was a product of arson motivated by insurance fraud.
