(WIVT/WBGH) – Five local students recently graduated from an apprenticeship from one of our area’s biggest employers.

The Raymond Corporation, in partnership with Broome-Tioga BOCES, has offered an apprenticeship program for the last thirty years. The program gives high school age students hands on experience in the STEM field, specifically, engineering, IT, finance, and supply chain.

This year, there were five new graduates of the program. Four of which went to Greene High School, right next door to Raymond, and one student is from Seton Catholic Central.

The talent acquisition manager at Raymond, Tara Mills says they are working to expand, and offer the apprenticeship to students in Chenango and Cortland Counties.

“The most recent high school graduates were five this year. One of those individuals is moving on to our co-op program where she’s pursuing a career in human resources this fall. We’ve also had selections in the co-op program develop their career through the director level within the organization,” said Mills.

Once the students graduate from the apprenticeship, Mills says many come back through Raymond’s Co-Op program. She says currently, there are over 100 job openings at Raymond’s facility in Greene.

The principal of the career development center at BOCES, Steve Moschak says the program caters to everyone, not just engineers or welders.

“Being able to sit there and talk to a customer, to problem solve, those are things that on-the-job training that our students at Raymond are able to participate in that you really can’t mimic anywhere else,” said Moschak.

Moschak says ideally, the program can attract local talent and keep them working in the area after they graduate.

The next wave of apprentices will start in September.
