BLUEFIELD — The Greeneville Flyboys increased their grip on the Appalachian West No. 1 spot with a 4-2 come-from-behind road victory over the Bluefield Ridge Riders on Sunday.

Bluefield had taken a 2-0 lead early after an Alexander Wright RBI single in the first inning and on an error by the Flyboys in the fourth. It wasn’t until the top of the sixth that the Greeneville bats came alive.

Brady Francisco kicked off the inning with a fly ball single. Then Nicklas Williams sent a pitch rocketing over the left field fence for a two-run homer, tying the game.

With two outs and the bases loaded, both Drew Culbertson and Jordan Lewis took pitches to the body, pushing two runs through and giving the Flyboys the lead, 4-2.

The Flyboys defense and pitching did the rest, improving to 21-12 on the year.

Cody Carson earned the win after throwing five innings. He gave up seven hits, two runs (one earned), walked one and struck out seven. Brady Frederick pitched two clean innings of relief, ending his night with two strikeouts.

Greeneville only had four hits, with Francisco going 2-for-4. Williams’ lone hit was his two-run home run and Ariel Antigua had one hit.

    SATURDAY’S GAME Greeneville 8 Bluefield 4

After back-to-back losses, the Greeneville Flyboys got back in the win column defeating Bluefield on Saturday at Pioneer Park.

Brodie Johnston gave Greeneville a 1-0 lead in the opening inning after scoring Tyler Inge on a groundout. In the second, the Flyboys extended their lead to 4-0, courtesy of Lewis, sending a pitch over the fences for a three-run homer.

The Flyboys added another run in the fifth when Francisco scored on a wild pitch.

Things were looking good for the home team, but the Ridge Riders made them sweat in the bottom of the seventh. Bluefield scored four runs to close the gap, 5-4.

Greeneville was determined not to take its third loss in a row however, and the offense rose up to drive in three runs in the ninth. Francisco scored on an infield error on a fielder’s choice and Max Knight and Nick Arias worked walks with two outs and the bases loaded to push two consecutive runs in, 8-4.

Tyler Jackson entered the game on the mound for the Flyboys in the final inning, and after walking his first batter, he struck out the second and worked a pop fly and a grounder to end the game.

Aaron Calhoun (2-3) earned the win on the mound, throwing the first 6 1/3 innings. He allowed five hits, three unearned runs, walked two and struck out five. Brock Toney pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up three hits, one run, walking three and striking out two.

At the plate, the Flyboys amassed 10 hits, with Williams leading the charge, hitting 3-for-4. Knight finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Francisco was 2-for-4. Arias had one hit and one RBI, Inge had one hit and Lewis’ lone hit was his three-run homer.

    FRIDAY’S GAME Johnson City 10 Greeneville 4

JOHNSON CITY — Two rough innings proved fatal for the Flyboys as they surrendered three runs in the second and seven in the fourth in a loss to the Doughboys in Johnson City, falling to 19-12 at the time.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the third, the Flyboys finally got on the board when Francisco hit a sacrifice bunt that turned into an infield error, scoring Lewis. Johnston drove in the team’s second run on a groundout, 3-2.

Greeneville’s hopes were dashed in the following Doughboys’ at bat as they gave up four runs before recording an out. The Flyboys were able to get the outs but not before finding themselves in a deep deficit, 10-2.

The Flyboys were able to put two more runs on the board, but not until the final inning, unable to climb out of the hole and falling to 19-12.

Lewis and Culbertson both hit 2-for-4 and Francisco had one hit and two RBI. BJ Peart, Tyler Inge and Mycah Jordan all had one hit.

Ethan Phillips (1-1) took the loss on the mound, pitching the first four innings, giving up 10 hits, 10 runs (six earned), walked three and struck out two.

Jamie Robertson threw three innings of relief, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out one. Cody Carson pitched a clean inning, striking out two, and Brady Frederick ended the final inning, giving up three hits and striking out two.
