Twister Corn: A Result of the Greenfield, Iowa Tornado

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The “Corn State” truly lives up to its name after an EF4 tornado rips through one of their beloved cities – Greenfield.

On May 21 ^st , 2024, a strong line of supercells developed over western Iowa, driven by a strong low-pressure system moving through the region. This system brought significant moisture and strong shear, helping set the stage for the expected severe weather. These supercells created multiple tornadoes, including the infamous Greenfield (EF4) tornado.

As the tornado touched down, it traveled for nearly 45 minutes. In addition, some winds peaked at nearly 185 mph. The tornado was estimated to be about a half-mile wide and traveled a total of about 44 miles.

In addition, the storm system was forecasted well in advance. The tornado threat was much expected, as were the wind and hail threats too.

In the aftermath of the event, nearly a couple months later, both local farmers and residents of Greenfield noticed something interesting. Corn! The tornado seemed to have picked up corn seeds from silos and fields, carrying them along its path. As the tornado’s winds weakened, the seeds were scattered and planted in the soil. On top of that, the heavy rains that followed helped initiate the corn’s growth.
