GREENFIELD, Iowa — Iowa storm victims are getting some help to save damaged family photos and heirlooms.

The Federal Emergency Management Administration is stepping in to help flood and tornado victims recover important family mementos.

The agency is hosting an event Wednesday in Greenfield where preservation specialists will show families how to safely clean photos, books, documents, and clothing. Attendees are asked to take digital photos of the items they need help with cleaning and restoring and bring them along but leave the items themselves at home to avoid risking more damage to them in transit.

Specialists will be on hand from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Nodaway Valley Elementary School on Wednesday.

Additional demonstrations will follow in other Iowa communities:

    • Tipton — July 25 from noon to 7 p.m. at Cedar County Fairgrounds, Matthews Building
    • Estherville — July 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church gym
    • Spencer — July 28, 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Clay Couty Regional Events Center-Tower Gate Pavilion
    • Rock Rapids — July 30, 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Forster Community Center
    • Rock Valley — Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
