Salt Creek Fire in Eagle Point at 1500 acres, level 1 evacuations issued
EAGLE POINT, Ore. – UPDATED 8:00 p.m.:. A level 1 (Be READY) evacuation is in place for the following zones:. The Salt Creek Fire burning on Salt Creek Road in Eagle Point is at 1500 acres, according to ODF Southwest. An Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 1 has been ordered and will be in-briefed at 10:00 a.m. Monday. Aircraft will be operating until nightfall and firefighters on the ground will be working overnight.

Former Oregon Ducks cornerback Khyree Jackson dies in car accident
Tragic news came out on Saturday morning when The Oregonian’s James Crepea reported former Oregon Ducks cornerback Khyree Jackson was killed in a car accident. Jackson was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings this spring after spending the 2023 season with the Ducks. He started his career at the junior college level before spending time with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 draft after racking up 34 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions in 2023. Jackson was drawing rave reviews during minicamp and offseason workouts with the Vikings and was expected to be an early contributor as a rookie in the NFL. He was 24 years old. First heat wave of the season will bring scorching temps in the 90s and 100s across the region
Excessive Heat Alerts are in place across all of Washington, most of Oregon and Idaho this week as triple-digit temperatures arrive during the first heat wave of the year. From Saturday to Friday, the Inland Northwest will be under either an Excessive Heat Warning or Advisory as daytime highs reach well into the 90s and triple digits, especially by Tuesday and Wednesday -- Spokane is under the warning. Sunday's forecast highs will trend in the low-to-high 90s for most of eastern Washington and North Idaho, with Spokane's high temperature expected to reach 96 degrees. However, places like Lewiston, Tri-Cities, and Vantage will cruise into the triple digits.
Tribal leaders on the coast call for action to return sea otters to Oregon
Leaders of two federally recognized Oregon coastal Indian tribes have called upon U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland to “take all appropriate actions” to direct the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to return sea otters — known to tribal ancestors as Xulh-t’ush, Giye’we, or Ela-ke’ — to the Oregon coast within the next five years. The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) has hired Lauren Brownrigg as an assistant executive director. Brownrigg has served as associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. since 2012. She was named senior associate athletic director in 2020.
