GREENSBORO — The Town Hall building in Greensboro is currently closed due to a bat infestation found over the weekend.

The town initially discovered a swarm of bats on Friday morning. On Saturday, the town said in a Facebook post that a bat was found in the building during a normal pest control checkup.

“Since the attic isn’t typically checked, this issue has unfortunately grown,” the town wrote. Town Manager Tammy Kelledes said multiple bats were found both dead and alive in the building.

The town added that the closure is for health reasons since bat droppings pose risks.

“It can carry harmful fungi that, when inhaled, can cause histoplasmosis — a respiratory disease that can be severe, especially for those with weakened immune systems,” the town wrote.

Kelledes told The Star Democrat that the building will be closed until at least next week, though the town is still “conducting as much business as usual.”

Residents can go to Meeting Hall at 111 S Main Street for assistance, which is located across the parking lot from Town Hall.

They can also reach the town by calling 410-482-6222 or emailing greensboro@greensboromd.com.

This article has been updated to include that the bats were initially found Friday morning.
