GREENSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina-based organization Samaritan’s Purse is assisting the Caribbean in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.

The organization’s cargo plane left Greensboro for the Caribbean on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after Beryl made landfall. It transported 13 disaster response specialists and over 24 tons of life-saving supplies, comprising 3,000 solar lights, 600 rolls of tarp, 300 collapsible jerry cans, a desalination water unit, and a mobile medical unit, according to the group.

Why Hurricane Beryl is so historic? CBS 17 meteorologist explains

Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Grenada as a Category 4 hurricane, the earliest on record, and became a Category 5 as it brought heavy damage to the Windward Islands.

Samaritan’s Purse says it will be distributing emergency shelter material and setting up water filtration systems in areas that are without access to clean water, in addition to coordinating with local church partners.

“Hurricane Beryl pummeled the Windward Islands, and left thousands of families in need of emergency relief,” Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham said in a statement. “We started building out pallets of cargo before the hurricane even made landfall and are now on the way with life-saving aid.

“Please join me in praying for the families who are in the path of this storm and for our Samaritan’s Purse staff who will be serving them,” he continued in his statement.
