    SportsWeek: Spartans track and field sending big contingent to Jr. Olympics

    The Carolina Spartans AAU track and field team was back in action last week in the Region 25 Qualifier event held in Monroe, and the outcome was memorable.

    The Spartans sped their way to the AAU National Junior Olympics by way of 11 individual athletes and six relay teams all qualifying for the event to be held July 27-Aug. 3 at North Carolina A&T.

    On the boys’ side, 13-year-old Joshua Howard won the 400 meters with a time of 54.34, while also placing second in the 100 and 200; J’khari Simmons (14) swept his sprints with wins in the 100 (11.48), 200 (22.95) and 400 (51.82); Joseph Gibbs (14) placed second in the 400 and 800; Bryson Davidson (13) won the 800 (2:10.50) and the high jump (5 feet-08 inches) and took third in the 100m hurdles; Makel Smith (15-16) was third in the high jump.

    In the relays, the 14 4x400m team (Gibbs, Nizzer Whitehurst, Simmons, Howard) took the top spot in 3:37.04; the 14 4x800m relay (Bryson Davidson, Jamari Adams, Gibbs, Whitehurst) was also first (8:56.54); the 15 16 4x400m (Smith, Tamari Wilcox, Yihiem Gibbs, E. Meachem) finished third.

    Also qualifying on the boys’ side by way of finishing in the top eight in their events were Eric O’Neal (13) in the 400 (6th place) and 800 (7th); Adams in the 800 (5th); and Wilcox in the 800 (6th.

    On the girls’ side, Jamiyah Sparks (12) took first place in the 1500m (5:43.36) and placed fifth in the 800; Kennedy Simmons (11) placed third in the discus; Shaleeah Kinsey (14) was third in the 400.

    In the girls’ relays, the 14 A team (Amyah Roseboro, Jaielle Boswell, Milana Gilbert, Kinsey) won the 4x400m in 4:13.59.

    Also qualifying by way of top-six finishes in the girls’ relays were the 14 B team (Alexia Henderson, Joy Fisher, Kiyona Williams, Laylah Joseph) in the 4x400m (4th); and the 14 4x100m team of Roseboro, Boswell, Williams, Kinsey (4th).
