GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A high-ranking Democratic lawmaker in North Carolina has announced her resignation.

On Tuesday, North Carolina State Rep. Ashton Clemmons (D-District 57) announced on X that she will be resigning from her seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives and taking a job with the University of North Carolina system. District 57 lies within Guilford County and includes northern Greensboro and Summerfield.

“It has truly been a great honor to serve the people of Guilford County and the State of North Carolina as a State Representative since 2019. Our state thrives when leaders focus on the people we serve; I am eternally grateful for the opportunities to learn deeply about our great state and move forward solutions for North Carolinians,” Clemmons wrote in the post.

She will be taking a job as the associate vice president of P-12 Strategy and Police in the UNC system, and her resignation is effective August.

“Representative Clemmons came to the General Assembly for the right reason she wanted to help the people of our state. She has authentically stayed true to that calling and leaves our caucus and state stronger. We know she will continue to do great work for North Carolina and wish her all the best in her next role,” State Rep. Robert Reives (D-District 54), Democratic leader, said.

Clemmons started her career as an educator and school administrator prior to her election in 2018. She was currently serving as the deputy leader of the NC House Democratic Caucus.

During her time in the house, she helped found the Early Childhood Caucus, co-chaired the COVID Education Working Group and worked to increase funding for the GTCC Aviation Center, Ready for School, Ready for Life program, Greensboro Science Center and more.

“Representative Clemmons looks forward to continued service to our state and it’s children in her new role,” the release said. “As Representative Clemmons always says, ‘Onward.'”
