Greensboro mother deals with flooding in home

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Steady rain throughout Thursday led to a mess inside Shanique Thomas’ unit at Haven at Willow Oaks Apartments in Greensboro.

Walking through puddles on the way to the bathroom has become a new normal for Thomas.

“The water will come through the back, and it will just sit right there, but when it rains … it’ll come from back door to front door,” Thomas said.

And on her back porch is a storm drain that’s causing all of the flooding.

“You can tell by the marks and stuff where the water will move here and come in the house,” Thomas said.

The Greensboro Housing Authority manages more than 60 units in the apartment complex, so FOX8 went to them for answers.

A spokesperson sent the following statement that reads in part:

….The persistent issue has been due to debris and trash in the lines, that routinely requires maintenance. In the third quarter of last year, we installed an additional line and added a concrete barrier to address this ongoing problem.

This morning, we were made aware of water intrusion in two units. During our assessment this morning, we discovered a bag of trash placed in the catch basin and debris obstructing one of the lines. Our team members have been onsite all day, clearing the lines and extracting water from the impacted units. We will continue to work with residents to resolve this issue and explore additional measures to ensure optimal water flow.

While fixing the GHA, Thomas says it should’ve been ​fixed well before she moved in.

An inspector with Greensboro Code and Compliance also stopped by Thomas’ place on Thursday, and an update on what they found will be made available in the coming days.
