GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Residents and business owners say they are feeling hopeful about the future of Randleman Road after the city held a community meeting to listen to their concerns.

The major road running through southeast Greensboro has been a hot topic after people have complained about a number of violent crimes.

Triad Meat Company has been in business for more than 60 years. The business has been on Randleman Road for 30 years.

Owner Sally Stevens said the community meeting left many people feeling hopeful about the future of the road.

“They were talking about … crosswalks, putting traffic medians in, and those are all great,” said Stevens.

Stevens says it’s a start, but it’s not enough.

“The first things are more important, which is cleaning up crime in our area and our speeding issues,” Stevens said. “We hear customers say once they come to our store, that’s as far down Randleman Road as they desire to go.”

One area of concern was addressed by residents in that meeting.

“I think that the community members left feeling good about the place that we’re in,” Southeast Greensboro Coalition Chair Crystal Black said.

A little more than two weeks ago, there was a shooting at Randleman Plaza shopping center.

During the community meeting, people got a chance to speak directly to the property owner.

“There were some robust conversations … so that going forward, we’re not at a reactive phase but at a proactive phase,” Black said.

In the last week, Greensboro police have placed surveillance equipment in the shopping center’s parking lot. On Friday, crews installed several security cameras in the shopping center

“They’ve coordinated efforts with that property manager to have some … camera coverage in that area. As you know, our Real-Time Intelligence Center is one of our newest tools that we’re really excited about. It allows businesses and … folks in our community to have a connectivity to the police department,” Greensboro Assistant City Manager of Public Safety Nathaniel Davis said.

The city is bringing in another set of eyes to help find ways to improve.

”We’ve acquired a consultant to help us really materialize what we can do to help the community look like it wants to look and operate in the way and continue to grow like it wants to grow,” Davis said.

In early September, the city plans to have community members address their concerns again to further develop the plan for the Randleman Road corridor.
