The Greenville Butler County Public Library is set to kick off its summer schedule the first week of June with a pair of free programs, including Mr. Dave and his ‘Big Time Groove’ rhythm and rhyme program on June 5 and Animal Tales: Zoofari Earth on June 7.

“The summer reading programs feature a lot of entertainers visiting from outside the county,” said Library Director Kevin Pearcey. “This year’s theme is ‘Adventure in Your Library,’ and we try to cater the entertainment to the theme.

“The Bluey Bash will kick off our summer reading sessions, Sessions will meet once a week starting in June. Kids up to ten years old will meet up for storytime and a craft or activity tailored to each age group.”

Mr. Dave will feature his new book, “Itsy Bitsy Blue,” in a high-energy program including drum-along fun and rhythm-based storytelling. Animal Tales: Zoofari Earth offers participants an up-close, hands-on look at a variety of animals from across the seven continents. Both programs start at 2 p.m. and are free for all ages.

These programs start an active two months of summer reading programming at the public library. Other scheduled programs include:

    – Sing-along with Miss Calliope – June 21 at 2 p.m.

    – ‘Bluey Bash’ Summer Reading Kickoff – June 29 at 10 a.m.

    – Barry Mitchell: Adventures in Fun! – July 17 at 2 p.m.

    – Mr. Bond’s Science Guys – July 23 at 3 p.m.

    – Star Wars Day – Aug. 3 at 10 a.m.

In addition to these programs, the library will offer hour-long themed ‘Summer Reading’ activity and craft sessions for children ages birth – 10, starting July 9 to Aug. 1, each Tuesday or Thursday. Parents can register their children for these sessions online or in the library starting in mid-June.

“Parents will also have an opportunity to register their child at our ‘Bluey Bash,’ when it’s held on June 29 to officially kick off the reading program,” Pearcey said.

The kickoff party will be based around the popular Australian TV program, Bluey.

The library will continue to offer its Toddler Tuesday program on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. for children ages 0-5 and Music and Movement on Thursdays at 10 a.m., welcoming all aged children and their parents.

Also in June, the library is starting a Summer Chess Club, which will be held bi-weekly, beginning on June 13 at 3 p.m. Chess boards and pieces will be provided, and all skill levels, especially beginners, are welcome to join.

Greenville resident Marcus Anderson expressed excitement about the upcoming events. “Summer just started and my kids are already bored,” Anderson said. “I was beginning to worry about how to keep them entertained, so this is exciting.”
