Headlines from the Greenville Advocate this week in 1967, offered a glimpse into the past with stories ranging from military honors to international visitors. • Lt. Col. Stringfellow Honored : Lt. Col. Charles C. Stringfellow was decorated with the Legion of Merit medal at Fort Monmouth, N.J. The award recognized his exceptionally meritorious service with the Army Electronics Command over a three-year period. He was instrumental in the development and production of new equipment for the Army Area Communications System and the Intrusion Detection System Project. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Stringfellow of Forest Home, he graduated as valedictorian from Greenville High School in 1946 and later attended Auburn University on a Walter O. Parmer scholarship, where he studied mechanical engineering. After receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army, he served at various posts including Fort Gordon, Ga.; Fort Bliss, Texas; Iowa State University; Japan; and Germany. In 1964, he earned a master’s degree in industrial management from Purdue University.

• Global Cyclist Visits Greenville : Shunsaku Fukuda, a 20-year-old college student from Osaka, Japan, visited Greenville during his bicycle trip around the world. Starting his journey in Japan, he rode across the United States from Los Angeles to Greenville. A member of the Servas Peacebuilders, Fukuda planned to visit numerous countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, and various European nations. His goal was to understand how people in developed countries perceive Japan. Fukuda, a student at Waseda University in Tokyo majoring in Commerce, aimed for a career in political science.

• Kindergarten Graduation : The kindergarten graduation ceremony featured the theme “Oh, what a beautiful day,” with performances by the young graduates. Highlights included Jim Dunklin as the Muffin Man, Missy Daniels and Beth Poole in “Me and My Teddy Bear,” Kit Carter and Frances Jones in “Brother, Come and Dance with Me,” John Hopkins as “Doggy in the Window,” and Mary Ann Williams and Britt Williams as “The Bear on the Ball.”

• Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Homecoming : Between 300-400 people attended the annual homecoming at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, an event drawing attendees from across the state. C.J. Donald, Sr., of Birmingham, chaired the event with assistance from Mrs. Harold Grimes of Pine Apple. Dr. C.J. Donald, Jr., also of Birmingham, presided over the church’s business session, while former Greenville First Baptist Church pastor Dr. Otis Williams spoke to the overflow crowd about “Walking in old paths.” Joe Henderson introduced Dr. Williams and Mrs. Porter Martin led a memorial service honoring the late John Glenn Stanley, a beloved friend of Mt. Moriah who regularly attended homecoming celebrations.
