Johansson performs for seniors at Country Place

Swedish musician Edward Johansson visited Country Place Assisted Living on June 27, delighting residents with a performance featuring a mix of 1950s and 60s rock and roll hits, classic Hank Williams songs and a few gospel numbers.

“It’s become a tradition, so every year I come here, I get invited by Alaina (Norman),” Johansson said. “And I’m more than happy to do it, to sing a few country and rock and roll songs.”

Towards the end of the show, Johansson took requests from the audience, leading a spirited sing-along. After his performance, the audience dispersed for refreshments and conversation, with many offering Johansson sincere thanks and expressing their appreciation for his musical talent.

“I’m from Sweden, and I came over here mostly for vacation, to visit my friends, but also for the Hank Williams Festival in Georgiana,” Johansson said.

Johansson has been in the United States for several weeks, having spent time visiting friends in Tennessee before returning to Alabama.

Johansson’s connection to Greenville began when his love for Hank Williams led him to attend and eventually perform at the Hank Williams Music Festival. During his time at the festival, Johansson met locals who introduced him to the community.

“I came to the Hank Williams Festival and I met people and they introduced me to a few people here in Greenville,” he said. “And it’s just, you know, you get to know more and more people.”

Country Place Executive Director Alaina Norman praised Johansson’s impact on the residents.

“Edward has been coming for about six years and our residents throughout the years have just absolutely loved it,” Norman said. “We can get them to come out for Edward, even if we can’t get them to come out and participate in anything else. He just brings so much joy to them.”
