    What is your ‘why?’

Early in my journalism career I learned that the most compelling stories illuminate a subject’s “why” — why they chose their career, why they opened their business, why they spearheaded a community effort, why they work to make the world a better place.

With the discovery came a realization of my own “why,” weaving into every article the common thread of why I love telling other people’s stories but rarely my own. The answer is simple — I aim to craft articles which help the reader see motivation for doing good in their community. And, in that effort, I hope to ignite a desire within readers to replicate the effort in their own unique way.

Along the way, coverage for christian publications allowed me to interview ministry leaders and missionaries. Each story tugged at my heart strings, and I wanted to be a part of their efforts to serve people.

On staff with The Greenville Advocate, I have met many who give of themselves to help local residents: teachers, police officers, firefighters, Extension agents and elected officials. The list is endless and with every publication, I write or read articles about good people who are just trying to make a difference.

However, covering community news is not always pleasant. There are the difficult stories of murder, arson, child abuse or political corruption. There are also the articles where coverage displeases some community members. Occasionally, we get it wrong and when we do, we are happy to set the record straight.

The Greenville Advocate is a community newspaper, here to share news and happenings of the area. The staff are committed to sharing local stories in a way that reveals each subject’s “why” and inspires readers to become involved.

The Greenville Advocate is not a sensational gossip rag. It is not the mouthpiece of any politician or group, not obligated to serve the purposes of any agency. We do what we do out of a deep love for our communities and not at the pleasure of anyone’s agenda.

We hope knowing this encourages readers to let us tell the story of their “why.” Please send story ideas and tips to us at news@greenvilleadvocate.com .
