A tropical disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean is gaining strength and could develop into Tropical Storm Ernesto by Monday night, bringing the potential for hazardous conditions along the Florida East Coast later this week. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), advisories were issued on Sunday for what is currently referred to as Potential Tropical Storm 5.

The storm, located several hundred miles east-southeast of Antigua, is expected to intensify into a tropical storm by Monday night and could reach hurricane status by Wednesday evening. The forecast track predicts the storm will approach or pass over Puerto Rico on Wednesday as it begins a northward turn into the Atlantic.

However, the NHC cautions that the forecast track remains uncertain due to difficulties in pinpointing the storm's initial center position. This uncertainty makes it challenging to predict the exact path and strength of the system as it develops.

Residents and visitors in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are urged to closely monitor the storm over the coming days, as advised by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Puerto Rico. The storm's expected turn to the north means that residents along the Gulf of Mexico coast in Louisiana and Texas are unlikely to experience any significant impacts, according to the NWS office in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

In Florida, the storm's development could lead to increasing swells along the East Coast, heightening the risk of dangerous rip currents later this week. Beachgoers are advised to stay alert and heed local warnings.

This potential storm comes on the heels of Hurricane Debby, which recently caused widespread flooding and strong winds across the Carolinas, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast regions. The tropical disturbance, initially identified on Sunday morning, has shown signs of becoming more organized, largely due to favorable conditions such as low wind shear, which allows the storm to strengthen without interference from conflicting wind patterns.

As the situation evolves, it is crucial for those in the potential path of the storm to stay informed and prepared for possible impacts.
