Universal Charter Schools program aims to grow their own teachers amid staffing shortage
As school districts across the country continue to face teacher shortages, Universal Charter schools in Philadelphia has gotten creative with the launch of their Aspiring Teachers initiative.The goal is to fill classrooms with homegrown talent.Talent like Marissa Rivers, who was once a substitute teacher but is now permanently head of the class.This Fall, Rivers will be returning to Alcorn Universal Charter school as a full time teacher.She is the charter schools' first para professional to complete their Aspiring Teachers program, which is aimed at taking those in a secondary classroom roles who are already in the school system and footing the bill to get them certified.The program is in partnership with LaSalle University and is made possible through funding from Philadelphia works and other donors.Action News reporter Christie Ileto has the full story in the player above.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission will have several meetings to gather public input on the rate increases proposed by Aqua Pennsylvania Inc. (Aqua Water) and Aqua Pennsylvania Wastewater Inc. The meetings will allow customers to share how rate increases proposed by the companies would affect them. Under the proposals, the average monthly bill for a residential water customer using 3,870 gallons per month would increase by $16.10 (19.9%) from $80.91 to $97.01. Over in Philadelphia's flood-stricken Eastwick neighborhood, the wheels of government are finally churning toward tangible solutions to the recurrent issue of devastating floods. In a critical move, FEMA senior officials Victoria Salinas and MaryAnn Tierney, alongside Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, descended upon the beleaguered community to unveil a windfall of more than $2 million in funding aimed at constructing barriers intended as a stopgap to keep floodwaters at bay. This interim fix aligns with FEMA's recent narrative of enhancing community resilience, particularly among historically disadvantaged areas.
