South Central’s Brook Evans, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, averages 14.0 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, including a recent game against J.H. Rose in which she pulled down a staggering 23 boards. She has led the Falcons in both points and rebounds as South Central entered the final phase of the regular season this week with an 18-2 overall record and an unblemished 9-0 mark in the Big Carolina 3A/4A Conference. Evans spoke with Gabe Cornwall recently about her background, her interests and her hopes for the future.

Q: Is there a player who you model your game after?

    A: I would say I look at A’ja Wilson a lot.

Q: When the word “rebounding” is brought up, what springs to mind?

A: When a shot goes up, my first thing to do is go get a rebound. Box out. Just look for the ball just because of how athletic I am, so I just move around pretty good.

Q: How has the experience been playing at South Central with your teammates and for coach Robert Duck?

A: The experience has been great so far from my first year until now. I really love it a lot.

Q: What fueled your love for basketball?

A: Pretty much my parents played basketball. I didn’t start playing basketball until I was 12. I was a dancer. My mom played basketball in college. She was like, “You don’t want to try it?” I was like, “Nah.” Then I changed my mind … “I guess I’ll try it,” and I fell in love with the game.

Q: How has that dance background helped you with footwork, particularly with drop steps and positioning on rebounding?

A: I learn quickly. Dancing is a lot of movement, so that helped with my footwork.

Q: While it’s early, has anyone reached out about playing at the next level?

A: North Carolina A&T, Mississippi State, Western Kentucky, UNC Charlotte.

Q: What are you looking forward to the rest of the season?

    A: State championship.
