    College roundup: ECU softball throws combined no-hitter, improves to 16-1

    The East Carolina softball team tossed a combined no-hitter on Sunday against N.C. Central in the first game of a doubleheader.

    Jordan Hatch, Taylor Apple, Payton Hudson and Devin Long combined to no-hit Central in a 6-0 win. It was the first no-hitter since Toni Paisley tossed one in 2011.

    The Pirates nearly accomplished the feat again in the second game, allowing just one hit in a 5-0 win.

    ECU (16-1) went undefeated at its own Pirate Invitational over the weekend, winning five games including three consecutive shutouts.

    The Pirates are back in action when they host N.C. State at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

    ECU women’s golfThe ECU women’s golf team finished strong in the final round of the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, shooting 2-under par 286 to finish fourth (33-over par 897) for the tournament on Sunday afternoon.

    The three-day tournament was held at the par-72, 6,107-yard Great Waters Golf Course.

    The Pirates were led by Macie Burcham, who carded a 7-over par 223 for a career-best finish with a ninth-place tie. Marta Perez tied for 12th after shooting 8-over par 224 and Nicole Nash shot 9-over par 225 to tie for 15th.

    Ella Stalvey and Danielle Modder tied for 23rd and 43rd respectively while Andrea Miralles tied for 49th as an individual.

    Host Mercer took team honors (1-under par 863) followed by Western Kentucky (25-over par 889) and Chattanooga (32-over 896), who finished one stroke ahead of the Pirates.

    PCC baseballThe Bulldogs were swept over the weekend by Richard Bland College.

    PCC lost on Saturday, 11-5, then lost a doubleheader on Sunday by scores of 12-10 and 12-4.

    JD Scarbrough had a home run and a triple over the weekend, while Zack Chavis belted a home run for the Bulldogs (5-4).

    PCC heads on the road for a three-game series with Brunswick Community College beginning on Saturday.

    PCC men’s basketballThe Bulldogs earned a 92-83 win over Catawba Valley Community College on Saturday. It was PCC’s fifth consecutive win and ninth in the past 10 games.

    PCC trailed 36-32 at halftime, but poured it on in the second half and outscored the hosts 60-47.

    The Bulldogs host Lenoir Community College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in their final regular season game.
