With tournament champions being crowned and brackets being decided, the stage is set for March Madness. But for those who enjoy the rising of the curtain as much as the running on the court, there are some March musicals on the calendar as well.

Several productions for young audiences are scheduled to play out this month, with four different shows over the next two weekends.

    ‘Annie Jr.’

The first in the lineup is a performance of “Annie Jr.” by Kids on Stage, a youth community theater group in Greene County. Based on the popular comic strip and adapted from the Tony Award-winning musical, the show features a plucky redhead determined to find the parents who left her on the doorstep of an orphanage in 1930s New York City. Annie and her sidekick mutt, Sandy, eventually make their way into the heart and home of billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

Shows will be presented at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Greene County Wellness Center, 84 N. Perry Drive, Snow Hill. Tickets are available at bit.ly/ticketskos or at the door. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for ages 10 and younger. Visit gckidsonstage.org.

    ‘Newsies’

New York is also the setting for “Newsies,” inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899. Jack Kelly and other homeless and orphaned New York newsboys and girls dream of leaving the city for a better place. The show is based on a 1992 film by the same name.

Christ Covenant School will present the musical at 6:30 p.m. March 21-22 and at 1 and 7 p.m. March 23 at Ignite Church, 4150 Bayswater Road, Winterville. Tickets are $11. Visit christcs.com.

    Family Fare

Historical events are the inspiration behind “Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical,” which is being presented at East Carolina University as part of the Family Fare series. The colorful new musical presents lessons from The Little Rock 9 for a new generation. The story centers on Lily Polkadot, who just moved to the small town of Rockaway. The first Polkadot in an all “Square” school, she finds it almost impossible to fit in and has to endure daily bullying and separate drinking fountains.

ECU Theatre for Young Audiences students will present the show at 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, in Wright Auditorium. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for students and youth. Visit tickets.ecu.edu.

    ‘The Secret Garden’

“The Secret Garden” is not a musical but is a moving story on the power of friendship. Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the play tells the story of Mary Lennox, a difficult child who must live at her uncle’s estate in England following the death of her parents. Her uncle’s son, an invalid named Colin, seldom leaves his room until Mary makes plans for him to visit the estate’s walled garden, which has been brought back to life.

Smiles and Frowns Playhouse will present “The Secret Garden” at 7 p.m. March 22 and 2 p.m. March 23 at Doug Mitchell Auditorium, 4354 Lee St., Ayden. Tickets are $5. Visit smilesandfrowns.org.
