Pitt Community College said a committee has selected semi-finalists from a “strong and diverse pool of candidates” in its search to fill its president’s post.

Current President Lawrence Rouse, who presided over the schools’ commencement ceremony last week, announced in January he would be stepping away on June 30. The Board of Trustees set a target date of April 26 for the receipt of applications.

Search committee members reviewed materials submitted by the candidates through May 9, the college said. The committee met on Tuesday to identify and select semi-finalists.

The committee will meet again next week to conduct virtual interviews with each of the semi-finalists over a two-day period.

Semi-finalist candidates will respond to questions about institutional challenges and opportunities, and their experiences and skill sets in leading and collaborating in academic excellence, student engagement, support and success, economic and workforce development, resource development and organizational operations.

This process will enable the committee to recommend finalists to the Board of Trustees, the college said.

The board will interview each of the final candidates over a period of approximately one week, currently scheduled for the week of May 28-31. All finalists will participate in open forums at the college. Dates, times and locations will be provide once finalists are confirmed.

The forums will be open to employees, students and community members. It is the board’s intention to submit its selection to the State Board of Community Colleges for consideration by June 1, as required by the state board.

PCC will continue providing updates on the process, the college said. Those with questions or suggestions can reach out to the ACCT Search Consultant Kennon Briggs at kennondb@gmail.com or 919-621-7988.

    Commencement

Nearly 500 members of Pitt Community College’s Class of 2024 participated in spring commencement at East Carolina University’s Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum May 7.

The ceremony featured Hank Dunbar, manager of First Citizens Bank’s Charitable and Philanthropic Group, as graduation speaker. Prior to joining First Citizens in 2014, Dunbar spent 15 years developing and leading charitable and philanthropic organizations.

Collectively, PCC’s 643 spring graduates earned 1,079 degrees, diplomas and/or certificates.

It was the sixth and last for Rouse as Pitt’s president. He said he is looking forward to devoting more time to his wife, Janie, three children and granddaughter.

“Though I am looking forward to my retirement and the opportunities it presents for spending time with loved ones and leisurely activities, I know I will miss participating in events like graduation,” Rouse said. “After 42 years in higher education, I know how important commencement is to the graduates and their families and friends, as well as the sense of pride PCC instructors and staff feel, knowing they played a role in helping others achieve an important milestone and enter the workforce fully prepared.”
