Happy 249th Birthday, America! As we celebrate the anniversary of our nation's independence on this Fourth of July, it's important to reflect on the journey that has led us here. America, a young country at just 249 years old, was born out of a fight for freedom – a fight to break away from the oppressive rule of Great Britain. The United Colonies, made up of English men and women, were not slaves to Great Britain, but paradoxically, they owned enslaved Africans in their colonies. These enslaved Africans, who fought on both sides for freedom from chattel slavery, were not granted the same rights and freedoms as their white counterparts. In the fight for independence, France played a crucial role by supplying the United Colonies with ammunition and weapons to battle against Great Britain. This is reminiscent of the current situation, with the United States supporting Ukraine in their fight against Russia. However, as we celebrate the birth of our nation, it's important to acknowledge that not everyone sees this day as a cause for celebration. For centuries, the Fourth of July has been marred by the history of slavery in America. The reality is that while the colonists fought for freedom from paying taxes on tea due to a lack of representation, they still oppressed and enslaved an entire group of people. It's no wonder that many choose to commemorate other dates in history that hold more significance for the African American community. The Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1st, freeing slaves in the Confederate States, and Juneteenth, the day when slaves in Texas finally learned of their freedom two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, are often celebrated instead of the Fourth of July. We must recognize that our fight for freedom is not the same for everyone. The freedom from paying taxes on tea does not equate to the freedom from a slave master who has stripped you of all your human rights. While we celebrate our independence, let's also remember those who were not granted the same freedoms and embark on a journey to create a truly inclusive and equal America. In recent years, there has been a growing shift towards acknowledging and addressing the darker aspects of our history, such as the legacy of slavery and systemic racism. People like Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee during the national anthem, have faced criticism and backlash for their actions. But Kaepernick's intention was not to disrespect the country, but to stand in solidarity with the slaves who fought for freedom and those who were forced to fight without any hope of gaining their own. As we raise our flags and light up the sky with colorful fireworks, let's also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of freedom. Let's honor the sacrifices of those who fought and continue to fight for equality and justice for all. Happy Independence Day, America.
