Nathan J. Varney of Greenville has earned second place in the North Carolina 1st Congressional District Artistic Discovery Contest.

Varney, who graduated from J.H. Rose High School last month, took second place with his piece, “Bamboo forester.” The work was chosen by the judges for the artist’s medium of ink and the expert use of a forced perspective.

“Nathan is a shining example of the remarkable artistic talent in eastern North Carolina,” said U.S. Rep. Don Davis, who hosted the competition. Davis will display Varney’s artwork in his D.C. office for one year.

The Artistic Discovery Contest recognizes and encourages artistic talent nationwide. Thirty-one students from 19 counties in the 1st District entered the high school art competition.

Judges included Jacinda Aytch, a professional artist from Farmville, Robin Haller, a professor of textile design at East Carolina University, and Clarence Goss, a professor of graphic design at Elizabeth City State University.
