GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The United for Education Parents Meeting at the Pitt County Agriculture Center was hosted by the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina (AMEXCAN) and Pitt County Schools.

Pitt County Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Steve Lassiter was the keynote speaker at the meeting which opened up a door for a conversation between parents and the surrounding bullying in and around their schools.

The meeting focused on places where bullying happens including bathrooms and on the buses. A specific example was talked about detailing how one D.H. Conley student even took their own life this past April because he did not want to go on the bus and get bullied the next day.

People emphasized the struggle the Hispanic and Latino communities go through with the issue. They said speaking a different language or not being familiar to the area and not having the resources available without a language barrier to help them.

“Solution one is to have a meeting with D.H. Conley High School to talk about what happened,” Executive Director of AMEXCAN Juvencio Rocha Peralta said. “Second, is to set up a calendar of meetings with the Pitt County Schools, and third, is to create a space so that we can meet on a regular basis.”

Dr. Lassiter also committed to more joint meetings like this one with direct questions from parents to discuss issues in the near future.
