Greenville United finished the season with a bang while giving its supporters an appropriate sendoff on Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday at John Paul II.

The Bucks capped the campaign with a non-league, 2-1 friendly victory over visiting AC Raleigh.

Despite not duplicating the memorable 2023 season in which the club rolled through the entire season unbeaten into the Nation Premier Soccer League playoffs, GUFC won three of its last four matches to close out the season.

That included victories against Tobacco Road (5-3) and Port City (2-0).

    Yard Gnomes

The Greenville Yard Gnomes dropped a 3-0 decision to Morehead City on Sunday at Guy Smith Stadium, giving the Gnomes a weekend split in Coastal Plains League baseball action.

The Gnomes beat the Wilson Tobs 8-4 on Saturday on Pirate Alumni Night.

Now in the final two weeks of the regular season, Greenville stands at 10-28 in the CPL.

This week’s schedule includes a home rematch against Morehead City on Wednesday (Girl Scouts Night) and another pair of home weekend games Saturday against Wilson (Christmas in July) and Sunday against Peninsula (Cartoon Night).

    LLSWS

Mexico will send a softball team to Elm Street Park as the Latin America representative for next month’s 50th Little League Softball World Series, which begins Aug. 4.

José González Torres Little League from Monterey defeated Guayama (P.R.) LL 5-0, in the region championship game.

José González Torres went 5-0 in the region tournament, which was held in Guánica, P.R., over the weekend. The championship game was a rematch of the first game of the tournament, which the Mexico club won 11-2.

It will be the sixth time a team from Mexico has competed in the LLSWS, with the most recent appearance coming in 2019 when Olmeca LL from Mexico City went 2-2. This is the first World Series appearance for José González Torres LL.

The team will compete in the Orange Bracket and will play in its first game against the Central Region at 4 p.m. on Aug. 4. Early-round games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

    Little League Baseball

The Tar Heel 9-11 and 10-12 baseball teams each won a pair of games over the weekend in their respective Little League state tournaments.

The 9-11s scored a 5-2 win over East Chatham on Saturday at Wilson’s Gillette Athletic Complex and then routed Lake Norman 15-5 in four innings on Sunday. That set up a 6 p.m. Monday game against Bull City.

The Tar Heel 10-12s, meanwhile, blanked Cherryville 12-0 in four innings on Saturday before a 7-0 shutout win over Lake Norman on Sunday. The team is slated to take on East Chatham at 6 p.m. on Tuesday night, also in Wilson.
