Nearly a month after breaking ground on its resource center project, Community Crossroads Center is urging community members to contribute to its capital campaign.

The center, Greenville’s only homeless shelter, needs to raise $1 million to fully fund construction of the 13,000-square-foot facility. It will house a medical clinic, learning labs, classrooms, conference space, offices for partner organizations, and storage.

The cost of the project is $4.2 million. Once it’s completed, the administrative offices in the existing shelter at 207 Manhattan Ave. will be remodeled to house six families in non-congregate family units equipped with beds and an adjoining bathroom.

Pitt County awarded the shelter a grant of $1 million toward construction, and the City of Greenville earmarked $725,000 for the renovation of the family wing.

Other organizations have helped launch the campaign. Towne Bank has pledged $250,000, the Womack and Perkins Trust awarded a total of $70,000 and Home Builders has donated $80,000.

The Eddie and Jo Allison Family Foundation have issued a challenge and will match individual donations up to a total $1.125 million. The match means that a donation of $100 for example, becomes $200. Naming rights will be available. Additionally, a brick program is being implemented for donors to purchase a brick for $500 in honor or in memory of an individual or group.

The nonprofit shelter has been in continuous operation since opening in 1987 and can accommodate up to 98 people a night. A clean bed, hot meals, showers and laundry facilities are provided.

The new resource center will expand services offering medical care, job counseling and assistance, classes, and other services to assist the residents in developing knowledge and skills to live independently.

Tax-deductible donations including brick purchases can be made by going to communitycrossroadscenter.org or by contacting Executive Director Charles Young at 752-0829.
