The intersection of West Fifth and South Washington streets is expected to be blocked for five to six months starting next week.

The closure is needed as work progresses on the city’s BUILD Project, which is making improvements to West Fifth Street.

Starting on Monday, the area will be closed so work crews can build wider sidewalks, brick crosswalks, site furnishings and street trees. The $48.5-million Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development Project began in August 2023.

Signs will be posted to detour westbound motorists onto Evans Street and Dickinson Avenue Extension, while eastbound motorists will be directed to Reade Circle. Southbound traffic on Washington Street will be detoured onto West Fourth Street.

Pedestrians will be detoured to South Greene Street and Evans Street. Businesses in the area will continue to be open to customers.
