    Events coming up in the Greenville area offer music, arts, theater and family fun. Here is a sampling.

    Barbecue festival

    Rub’n Shoulders in Farmville, a barbecue festival and cook-off, will be held from 2-8 p.m. today at Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery, 4519 W. Pine St., Farmville. The event will include music, craft beer and food. Visit facebook.com/farmvillencchamber for details.

    Science Saturdays

    The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences at Greenville, 226 W. Eighth St., will host Science Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. today. The event will include trivia and games.     Auditions

    Magnolia Arts Center, 1703 E. 14th St., will host auditions for “A Grand Night for Singing” at 10 a.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tentative performance dates for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical are Oct. 17-20. Visit magnoliaartscenter.com.

    Music House

    The Music House, 408 W. Fifth St., will host “The Italian Song Book” performance at 3 p.m. Sunday. The concert will feature works by Hugo Wolf performed by Jessie Wright Martin, mezzo-soprano; Patrick Howle, baritone; and John O’Brien, piano. Suggested donation is $20.     Harry Potter viewing

    Farmville Public Library, 4276 W. Church St., will host its final Harry Potter Movie Monday event at 1 p.m. Monday. Free. Visit farmvillelibrary.org.

    Art exhibits

    Emerge Gallery, 404 Evans St., is hosting the K-12 Student Art Exhibition for Pitt County Schools. Visit emergegallery.com. Greenville Museum of Art, 802 S. Evans St., is hosting “The Home I Never Knew: Ni de Aquí, Ni de Allá.” The exhibit, which will remain on display through Nov. 1 in the West Wing and Commons galleries, features the work of two dozen artists and emphasizes diversity of experiences and identities among Latino communities associated with being both from the United States and from their countries of origin.     HeARTS exhibit

    The HeARTS Exhibition will be held from 5:15-7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Jaycee Park Center for Arts and Crafts, 2000 Cedar Lane. The event, by Heartoscope and Deborah J Sheppard, will feature a chance to meet young artists and purchase their works. Refreshments will be served.

    Snakes of North Carolina

    River Park North, 1000 Mumford Road, Greenville, will host Snakes of North Carolina from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday. The free program will be held indoors, where participants will learn about identifying venomous and nonvenomous snakes. Participation is limited. Register before noon Monday.     ‘Once Upon a Mattress’

    Farmville Community Arts Council will present “Once Upon a Mattress,” youth edition, at 7 p.m. Aug. 1-3 and 3 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Paramount Theatre, , 3723 N. Main St., Farmville.     Ayden First Friday

    Ayden will host its First Friday celebration on Aug. 2 with events around town. The Ayden Museum opens at 10:30 a.m. at 554 Second St. A Quilts in the Park show will begin at 4 p.m. at Ayden Veterans Memorial Park, 287-313 W. Third St. A pre-sale of this year’s Collard Festival T-shirt will also take place at the park. Gwendy’s Goodies, 4221 Lee St., will host a Trivia Game Night from 6-7:30 p.m.

    Softball opening ceremony

    The 2024 Little League Softball World Series opening ceremony is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Town Common, 105 E. First St. The 12 participating teams, including the hometown North Carolina host team, will be introduced.

    Softball world series

    The Little League Softball World Series will be held Aug. 4-11 at Stallings Stadium at Elm Street Park, 1055 S. Elm St. The event which will celebrate its 50th anniversary, will include a dozen teams from around the world, including a North Carolina host team from Pitt County Girls Softball League. Games will begin at 10 a.m. Aug. 4, with additional games at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. The local team will take the field at 7 p.m. Aug. 4, playing the Asia-Pacific team.

    National Night Out

    The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office is planning National Night Out events from 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 6 at Bell Arthur EMS, 466 Stantonsburg Road, and G.R. Whitfield School, 4839 School Road, Grimesland.     Market on the Square

    The Winterville Chamber of Commerce will host Market on the Square from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at 252 Main St. Monthly Market on the Square events include musical entertainment, food and craft vendors and children’s activities. Visit wintervillechamber.com.

    Collard Festival pageants

    The Ayden Collard Festival pageants will take place on Aug. 10. Scheduled events are: Little Miss Pageant, 11 a.m. Collard Princess Pageant, 2 p.m. Collard Queen Pageant, 7 p.m. Visit facebook.com/AydenCollardFestivalPageant.

    Comic Con

    Greenville Comic Con will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 10 at the Greenville Convention Center, 303 S.W. Greenville Blvd. The event celebrates comic culture, giving fans a chance to meet characters, creators and comrades. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for youth 4-12 and free for children 3 and younger.     Men Who Cook

    A cooking competition for men will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at Brook Valley Country Club, 311 Oxford Road. The event brings together local male amateur chefs and their favorite sous chefs who battle it out to please the taste buds of hungry attendees. Entrance fee is $50 per station. Chefs may enter one category: cocktail, appetizer, soup/chili, entree or dessert, and there will be one winner per category. All proceeds benefit local cancer patients and their families.
