Upstate high school football Week 1 schedule, highlighted by J.L. Mann vs. Gaffney

It’s only Week 1 of the high school football season, but Gaffney against J.L. Mann at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Greenville sure feels like a preview of a possible Class AAAAA Upper State championship game.

Mann and Gaffney were second and third, respectively, last week in the Upstate Super 25 power rankings. They are sixth and 10th, respectively, in the MaxPreps statewide poll. Mann opened in Week Zero with a 56-0 win at Midland Valley. This will be the season opener for Gaffney.

Other Upstate teams opening their 2024 schedules are Berea, Blue Ridge, Carolina, Travelers Rest, Wade Hampton and Woodmont.

Westside (1-0) and T.L. Hanna (1-0), No. 1 and No. 4, respectively in the Super 25, are off this week ahead of their rivalry game Sept. 6 at Hanna.

Blacksburg (1-0) also has an open date.
