    ‘No evidence:’ Wildlife, creeks not impacted by reported chemical spill

    DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — An investigation is ongoing after a reported chemical spill occurred in Darke County.

    The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency reported on July 11 a chemical spill was reported to the organization on July 10. According to an Ohio EPA spokesperson, the Ohio EPA contacted BASF, a chemical plant, which 2 NEWS found is in Greenville.

    It is reported that when the Ohio EPA contacted the company, it was allegedly told that “paint bonding material discharged into a stormwater retention pond on the property.”

    A BASF spokesperson provided 2 NEWS with the following statement:

    The BASF site in Greenville, Ohio, became aware of the inadvertent release of a non-hazardous material from a storage tank on-site, and plant personnel responded immediately to begin mitigation and cleanup.

    An investigation is underway to determine the root cause of the incident.  The company is cooperating with the Ohio EPA and all other authorities. BASF regards the protection of health, safety, and the environment as our highest priority. We care about our employees, and our community.”

    In an update on July 12, the Ohio EPA spokesperson confirmed to 2 NEWS that “material” had reportedly ended up in a ditch line from the BASF property. The Ohio EPA spokesperson also verified that Bridge and Greenville creeks were not impacted.

    “Ohio EPA’s OSC observed no evidence of staining in the ditch, nor any spill impact to Bridge Creek or Greenville Creek,” said the Ohio EPA spokesperson. “There was also no evidence that wildlife has been affected.”
