Another step on the city of Greenville’s goal of creating affordable housing around the area.

A ribbon cutting was held Friday for the renovated Century Plaza Apartments just outside of downtown Greenville.

“Preservation of housing, all of the experts around the country would say is one of the most important things you can be about,” Greenville Mayor Knox White said. “It doesn’t get as much attention, perhaps people don’t understand it, but if you came out here a year ago, you would have seen a relatively empty apartment complex over here. There were very few cars in the parking lot, a lot of empty units.”

He explained that this is the third and so far most expensive affordable housing project the city has so far completed.

At-large city council member Dorothy Dowe also spoke at the ribbon cutting, explaining that this and other Greenville Housing Fund projects rely on support and cooperation from the community.

“Our city council, led by the mayor, is committed to affordable housing priorities and has been delivering on this need each budgeting cycle since I’ve been on council,” Dowe said. “We recognize that our work is not done. We look forward to continuing to partner with every community group that can help address the need for housing affordability and is willing to roll up their sleeves to help us to work towards this goal in the city of Greenville.”

The apartment complex is now leasing one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.
