The Salvation Army of Greenville has unveiled the public phase of a $16 million capital campaign, “Rebuilding Hope Restoring Lives,” to redesign and renovate its existing social services campus and shelter facilities in Greenville.
The organization says the revitalized 45,000-square-foot campus will provide greater security and cohesiveness for those in need. The new space will increase efficiency in daily operation, create greater security and accessibility, and allow for better engagement with clients, according to a Salvation Army of Greenville, Pickens and Oconee Counties news release.
The renovated campus will include increase the emergency shelter bed capacity from 93 to 143. It will also feature, according to the release:
- New transitional housing space where clients can begin to rebuild their lives.
- Family units to providing temporary housing options to keep the family together (men with children, couples with children, families with older children).
- Larger dining hall facilities that are less institutional (more natural light) to serve meals.
The current chapel will remain in place with a new faade to complement the rest of the revitalized campus, the release stated. Revitalizing the current campus will bring services under one roof, with corridors connecting the buildings, allowing The Salvation Army to serve more clients, safely and effectively. It will incorporate an existing diversion program to serve the community with rent, utility, food and clothing assistance.
The reallocation of the total bed capacity will provide individuals and families a safe place to sleep where the environment is designed to restore dignity, according to the release. The updated design will also provide much-needed new family and transitional housing, which the Salvation Army says is vital to empowering independent living.
McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture is the architecture firm for the project.
The Salvation Army has served Greenville more than 119 years. As the area has grown, so has the homeless population, as well as the needs to support those experiencing the effects of poverty, the release said, and the current shelter buildings, constructed in 1980, struggle to meet the demands.
“Greenville is well-known for its generous spirit and giving attitude towards helping those in need,” Major Mike Harris, area commander for The Salvation Army of Greenville, Pickens and Oconee Counties, said in the release. “Community support from private donors, businesses and foundations will enable The Salvation Army to reach our goal and make the much-needed shelter renovations a reality.”
