Organizations agree to create film academy in Greenville

Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina is teaming up with the Urban League of the Upstate to create a film academy in the Upstate.

The two organizations will sign a memorandum of understanding at 10 a.m. July 9 at 212 Pelham Davis Drive in Greenville to make the partnership official, according to a Goodwill news release.

The film academy will offer a comprehensive four-week intensive course designed to introduce learners to essential skills and technology needed to work in the film and television industry, the release stated. The intent is for participants to gain the knowledge and expertise required to break into and thrive in the field.

The new program joins Goodwill’s ELEVATE Drone Pilot Training Program and the Tech Academy. Goodwill’s objective is to provide crucial education and career services in South Carolina.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Urban League of the Upstate to launch this film academy,” Pat Michaels, Goodwill president and CEO, said in the release. “This initiative represents a significant step forward in providing creative career opportunities for our community members. By leveraging our combined resources and expertise, we are committed to empowering individuals through education and skill development, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and dynamic local film industry.”

Goodwill of the Upstate/Midlands South Carolina has 41 retail stores across 16 counties. More than 90 cents of every dollar spend at those stores is invested into provided education and career services at no cost to participants, according to the organization.
